A photovoltaic effect
Light frees electrical charges inside a semiconductor cell. Connected cells form a module; connected modules form the array.
See how solar panels, inverters and batteries work together, and what changes when the grid goes down. A practical starting point for Bendigo homes.

Solar supplies household loads through the inverter. Available surplus can charge the battery, then export if permitted. The grid fills any shortfall.
Conceptual examples only. Actual energy flows follow the installed equipment, settings, tariffs and available power.

Cloud, shade, roof faces and cell temperature change output. A panel’s rated watts are measured under test conditions, not a constant supply.
Solar can supply your daytime appliances and reduce purchased electricity. A well-designed layout considers the roof and household together.
Your appliances use AC electricity. Solar panels produce DC. The inverter performs the conversion and manages the solar array within its operating limits. A hybrid adds the ability to work with supported batteries.
MPPT inputs help handle different panel groups. Panel voltage, current and layout need to suit the exact inverter.
Monitoring, temperature performance, Australian support and future compatibility are practical ownership considerations.
A standard grid-connected inverter normally stops during an outage. A hybrid label alone does not define the supported backup circuits.
Battery cells store energy through reversible chemical reactions. A battery-management system monitors the cells; a compatible inverter controls the exchange with the home. Storage shifts energy in time—it does not generate more energy.
| Measure | Meaning for your home |
|---|---|
| Usable energy · kWh | How much energy the specified battery makes available under its test conditions. |
| Output · kW | How much load can run at once, with motor-starting demand checked separately. |
| Round-trip losses | Charging and discharging use some energy; energy delivered back is lower than energy put in. |
| Reserve | Energy held for a potential outage rather than everyday use. |
Store an available surplus rather than exporting all of it. The benefit depends on actual generation and evening demand.
Supported schedules can work with tariffs. Compare any VPP control, contract and warranty conditions.
A correctly configured system can support selected loads during a blackout. Available energy, power and weather still limit operation.
Compatible backup equipment separates the supported home supply from the electricity network when it fails. This prevents energising the public grid.
The inverter and battery supply the designed circuits. Fridge, lighting and communications may be easier to support than large cooking or heating loads.
Runtime depends on usable charge, reserve, consumption and available solar recharge. Solar recharge during an outage is system dependent.
We confirm backup power, surge limits, phase distribution, changeover behaviour and commissioning. Backup for a grid-connected home and a permanent off-grid system have different design requirements.
